OUTSIDE READING 27

Today I'm blogging about Obama's inauguration as the new president of the United States. First of all, there were over 3000 police and secret service agents protecting him. This police force was not only for the president but also for all the other important guests like Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Jimmy Carter, George Bush and many others. Secondly, there were probably about 5 million people crowded around the Washington Memorial to be apart of Barack's inauguration. It said on the news that 99% of the people wont be able to see or hear anything it's just the fact that they got to be somewhat apart of it that makes them feel it's worth it.

OUTSIDE READING #26

I read an article called Key to fighting colds: Bond with your pillow, no author listed. This article was about how sleep effects one getting a cold. Sheldon Cohen said, "The longer you sleep, the better off you are, the less susceptible you are to colds". So the more hours of sleep you get, the lower the chance of catching a cold. Researchers paid healthy adults $800 to have cold viruses sprayed up their noses and wait in a hotel for five days to see if they got sick. The eight hour sleepers were much less likely to get sick than those who slept for less that seven hours. Also, people who slept less than seven hours a night in the weeks before they became exposed to the virus, were three time likely to catch a cold that the ones who slept longer. Overall, one should get sleep to avoid becoming sick.

OUTSIDE READING #25

i read an article on cnn.com called 'Men Stoned to Death For Adultery, Murder in Iran'. In this article it talked about how before it was banned, in Iran they would stone people to death. They would bury the person in a hole up to their neck so they couldn't get out then they would allow stones that are "large enough to cause pain, but not so large as to kill the victim immediately" to be thrown until they die which increases the suffering and time of the death. This was used as a punishment for many crimes, it talked about it being used after the ban was set two men were stoned to death and a third one escaped his hole and is waiting for his punishment. In the past it was more common for women to be stoned because of their level of illiteracy they would sign confessions to crimes they did not commit because they could not read it.

OUTSIDE READING #24

I read an article on Kare11.com titled "Bus Driver Pulls Knife on Students." The story is said that a bus driver noticed his bus was full of crumbs, garbage and such. This was in Texas and the bus driver supposively pulled his pocket knife out against three kids. The kids were in sixth grade. To the bus drivers knowledge, these kids left cookie crumbs and messed up his bus. The bus driver is 66 years old and was fired since he had been put on administrative leave. I dont get why a bus driver would ever do such a thing, when someone becomes a bus driver its because they enjoy being around kids, still aware that things will get out of line. No kid should ever be put in this situation, especially for a problem such as cookie crumbs being left on the school bus floor.

OUTSIDE READING #23

I read an article on cnn.com called "Actors' son Jett Travolta dies at 16". On friday January 2nd, Jett Travolta, John Travolta's 16 year old son, passed away in the Bahamas. He had a seizure and hit his head but the exact cause of death is still unknown because his autopsy hasn't yet taken place. Jett Travolta suffered from a disease called Kawasaki disease that has caused him to have seizures throughout his lifetime. There is no known cause of this disease and it affects the blood vessels. Usually its only found in children ages 2-5. Since the Travolta's were regular customers of the West End resort, they were close to the owners and workers. The resort was very sad about the news of his death and many were effected.

I read an article on cnn.com called "'Marley' on top for second straight week". For the first few days of 2009 movie sales are already sky rocketing. The new family flick Marley and Me has pulled in $106.5 million dollars. Many other movies came somewhat close but none of them pasted the $100 million dollar mark except for Marley and Me. The others were The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Valkyrie and Bedtime Stories. Bedtime Stories produced about $85 million even though critics bashed the movie and gave it horrible reviews. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button made $80 million dollars which is good for the producers because it was a very expensive movie to create. Valkyrie produced $60.7 million dollars so far which is surprising because it was very unknown before it came out in theaters.
